Often asked: Bicycle, How To Remove Free Hub?

How do I change my bike hub?

Hub Adjustment – Cartridge Bearing Hubs

  1. Mount bike in repair stand.
  2. Remove rear wheel from bike. If adjusting front wheel, remove front wheel as well.
  3. Remove quick-release skewer and springs. Remove any rubber boot covering left side cones and locknuts.
  4. Insert skewer through cog side of hub.

How do I know if my free hub needs replacing?

Check the freehub for wear to see if it needs replacing or just cleaning and relubing. To do this, firmly grab the splined body and give it a wiggle. If it moves more than a couple of millimetres side to side, replace it.

When should I service my free hub?

So for hubs that are actually serviceable, about once a seaon/year, more often if you ride daily or in sloppy or adverse conditions. For Shimano style “non serviceable” free hubs, just have a spare on hand, ride it till it gives problems and replace it.
