There should be no “break in” period for a new chain/ cassette combo. New chains and old cassettes may have issues which will not resolve themselves because the cassette is too worn but a new/new combo should work fine right out of the box.
How long does it take to break in a bicycle?
A brand new bike will most likely need to be taken back within 30 days (that’s what my LBS offers) for a FREE tune up since things get a bit loose and cables stretch EVERYTHING will loosen up on the bike. Might be 20 miles, might be 200 miles. Take it to the LBS and ask for a general tightening.
Do bike chains loosen over time?
Do bicycle chains really stretch? The short answer is no, however they do wear in such a way as to cause their maximum length to increase. Mechanics usually refer to this as chain “stretch.” It is the sign of a worn out chain that should be replaced.

Depends on the chain. If it’s a chain with cylindrical pins (most singlespeed and some narrow chains) then the damage will be negligible. Even if you always use the same pin you should be fine the first 10 or so times.
Can I fix a broken bike chain?
To fix a broken or bent chain, you will need to remove it from your bike AND remove the broken or bent links. To do that, you will need a chain breaker tool. In the video, we used the Park Tool Master Chain Tool, which is the best tool for the job.

There is no break-in period. Saddles are similar to shoes in that the fit is very personal and a pair of thick leather boots will need a break in period, unlike a pair of soft-soled synthetic shoes. There is no one saddle that fits everyone, and the shape and adjustment is sometimes more important than the material.

Why does my bike chain slip when I pedal hard?
Most of the time, a skipping chain is caused by cable stretch. In the first half dozen rides on a new bike your shift cables stretch the most. They can also stretch over time as you ride. Hippley explains, “It takes cable tension to open a derailleur, which shifts your chain between gears.
How often should I change my bike chain?
The 2,000-Mile Rule. To avoid this accelerated wear of your cassette and chainrings, a general rule of thumb is to replace your bike’s chain every 2,000 miles. Mind you, this is just a starting point. No two chains will wear at exactly the same rate because no two riders treat their chains the same. 4
How much force can a bicycle chain withstand before it breaks?
A standard 41 chain is rated to 2000 pounds. A chain lesser than a bicycle chain was rated at 900 pounds so that should give you some range to go by. My marginally educated guess would say that a multi speed bike chain would be around 1000 pounds and a 410/BMX chain I would say in the 1200 pound range.

Once done, rinse it with water and then air dry with compressed air.
